Key term

What do the A-band, I-band, H-zone and M-line of a sarcomere each contain?

Key term

Compare the appearance of skeletal, cardiac and smooth muscle under the microscope.

Key term

Distinguish between a muscle, a muscle fibre and a myofibril.

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Distinguish between a muscle, a muscle fibre and a myofibril.

    Model answer

A muscle is an organ made of many muscle fibres, each fibre is one elongated cell with many nuclei, and each fibre contains many myofibrils, the contractile threads that run along it.

  2. 2

    What is a sarcomere?

    Model answer

A sarcomere is the repeating contractile unit of a myofibril, running from one Z-line to the next.

  3. 3

Which structure marks each boundary of a sarcomere?

    Model answer

The Z-line marks each boundary of a sarcomere.

  4. 4

What is the A-band of a sarcomere?

    Model answer

The A-band is the darker region of the sarcomere and corresponds to the full length of the thick myosin filaments.

  5. 5

What is the I-band of a sarcomere?

    Model answer

The I-band is the lighter region that contains only thin actin filaments and straddles a Z-line.

  6. 6

    What is the H-zone?

    Model answer

The H-zone is the region at the centre of the A-band where only myosin filaments are present.
