- 3 things to know
- Unit A2 2
Overview
Primary photosynthetic pigment of green plants, three accessory pigments found in a chloroplast and colour of chlorophyll a and of chlorophyll b.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Name three accessory pigments found in a chloroplast.
State the colour of chlorophyll a and of chlorophyll b.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name the primary photosynthetic pigment of green plants.
Model answer
Chlorophyll a is the primary pigment and sits at the reaction centre of each photosystem.
- 2
Name three accessory pigments found in a chloroplast.
Model answer
Chlorophyll b, carotene and xanthophyll are accessory pigments.
- 3
State the colour of chlorophyll a and of chlorophyll b.
Model answer
Chlorophyll a is blue-green and chlorophyll b is yellow-green.
- 4
State the colours of carotene and xanthophyll.
Model answer
Carotene is orange and xanthophyll is yellow.
- 5
Explain the function of the accessory pigments.
Model answer
Accessory pigments absorb wavelengths that chlorophyll a absorbs poorly and pass the energy on to the reaction centre, so a wider range of the spectrum can be used.
- 6
Why do most leaves appear green?
Model answer
The chlorophylls absorb strongly in the blue and red regions but reflect and transmit green light, so green is the wavelength that reaches the eye.
