- 3 things to know
- Unit A2 2
Overview
DNA microarray, two distinct uses of microarray technology and personalised medicine.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How is a patient's DNA prepared before it is applied to a microarray?
What happens when the labelled sample is applied to the microarray chip?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a DNA microarray?
Model answer
A DNA microarray is a small chip carrying thousands of different single-stranded DNA probes fixed in a grid, with the identity of the probe at each spot already known.
- 2
How is a patient's DNA prepared before it is applied to a microarray?
Model answer
The DNA is cut into fragments, made single-stranded and labelled with a fluorescent or chemiluminescent tag so that any binding can later be detected.
- 3
What happens when the labelled sample is applied to the chip?
Model answer
Fragments hybridise to any probe whose sequence is complementary to their own, and unbound fragments are then washed away.
- 4
How is the result of a microarray read?
Model answer
A scanner measures the signal from each spot in turn and software analyses the grid digitally, and because the position of every probe is known the sequence responsible for each signal can be identified.
- 5
What does the strength of the signal at a spot indicate?
Model answer
The strength of the signal is proportional to the quantity of labelled sample bound there, which represents the level of expression of that gene in the individual.
- 6
State two distinct uses of microarray technology.
Model answer
Microarrays are used to profile which genes are being expressed in a tissue and to detect variation in gene sequence between individuals.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Gene Technology, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
