Fitness and the process of selection
- 3 things to know
- Unit A2 2
Overview
Fitness in the biological sense, selection in terms of alleles and selection pressure.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why can selection not act where there is no variation?
Define selection in terms of alleles.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by fitness in the biological sense?
Model answer
Those features of an organism that make it well adapted to its environment, so that it survives and reproduces successfully.
- 2
Why is fitness not the same as physical strength?
Model answer
It is measured by the number of offspring an organism contributes to the next generation, which can depend on camouflage, fertility or timing rather than strength.
- 3
What does selection act on?
Model answer
The genetic variation already present in a population.
- 4
Why can selection not act where there is no variation?
Model answer
If all individuals are alike there is nothing to favour, so no allele can become more common than another.
- 5
Define selection in terms of alleles.
Model answer
The differential perpetuation of alleles to subsequent generations, brought about by differences in both survival and reproduction.
- 6
Why does selection involve reproduction as well as survival?
Model answer
An organism that survives without breeding passes on nothing, so survival matters only in so far as it leads to offspring.
