Leaf vascular tissue and stomata
- 3 things to know
- Unit AS 1
Overview
Leaf vein, advantage of veins being branched throughout the leaf and function of the stomata in gas exchange.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a leaf vein?
State the role of the xylem within a leaf vein.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a leaf vein?
Model answer
A leaf vein is a vascular bundle running through the mesophyll and containing xylem and phloem.
- 2
State the role of the xylem within a leaf vein.
Model answer
The xylem supplies the leaf with water and with the inorganic ions taken up by the roots.
- 3
State the role of the phloem sieve-tubes within a leaf vein.
Model answer
The phloem sieve-tubes translocate the sugars made in photosynthesis away from the leaf to the rest of the plant.
- 4
Explain the advantage of veins being branched throughout the leaf.
Model answer
No mesophyll cell is far from a vein, so water reaches every cell and sugars are removed from every part of the leaf quickly.
- 5
Give one function of the leaf veins other than transport.
Model answer
The veins also support the leaf blade and hold it flat and spread out to the light.
- 6
What is a stoma?
Model answer
A stoma is a pore in the leaf epidermis through which gases pass in and out of the leaf.

Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Tissues and Organs, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
