Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Name the four chambers of the mammalian heart.

    Model answer

They are the right atrium, the right ventricle, the left atrium and the left ventricle.

  2. 2

Which chambers of the heart receive blood, and from where?

    Model answer

The atria receive blood, the right atrium from the venae cavae and the left atrium from the pulmonary veins.

  3. 3

Explain why the walls of the atria are thin.

    Model answer

The atria only have to push blood a short distance into the ventricles below them, so little force is needed.

  4. 4

Explain why the wall of the left ventricle is thicker than that of the right.

    Model answer

The left ventricle pumps blood at high pressure all the way round the body, whereas the right ventricle only pumps it to the nearby lungs at low pressure.

  5. 5

    What is the interventricular septum?

    Model answer

The interventricular septum is the wall of muscle separating the left and right ventricles.

  6. 6

Why is it important that the septa completely separate the two sides of the heart?

    Model answer

They prevent oxygenated and deoxygenated blood from mixing, so blood leaving for the body is fully oxygenated.
