Gene Technology

Genetically modified microorganisms

  • 3 things to know
  • Unit A2 2

Overview

Recall questions on inserting a human gene into a bacterium, the plasmid as a vector, restriction enzymes and ligase, the production of insulin and other proteins, and the advantages over extracting the product from an animal.

What you need to know

Answer each one before you reveal it.

Evaluation

Give one advantage of using bacteriophages rather than an antibiotic to treat a bacterial infection.

Key term

Give three reasons why bacteria are convenient organisms to modify genetically.

Key term

Why can a human gene be expressed correctly inside a bacterium?

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Give three reasons why bacteria are convenient organisms to modify genetically.

    Model answer

Bacteria reproduce extremely rapidly, they are cheap and simple to culture in large volumes, and they carry plasmids that make convenient vectors.

  2. 2

Why can a human gene be expressed correctly inside a bacterium?

    Model answer

The genetic code is virtually universal, so a bacterium reads the human triplets as coding for the same amino acids and assembles the same polypeptide.

  3. 3

Name the first human protein to be produced commercially by genetically modified bacteria.

    Model answer

Human insulin was the first, and it is now made by bacteria carrying the human insulin gene.

  4. 4

Give three advantages of bacterially produced human insulin over insulin extracted from animals.

    Model answer

It is an exact copy of the human protein so it is far less likely to cause an allergic reaction, it can be produced in unlimited quantity without depending on slaughterhouse supply, and it is acceptable to people whose beliefs prevent them using animal products.

  5. 5

Name three medically useful substances other than insulin that genetically modified microorganisms produce.

    Model answer

Modified microorganisms produce human growth hormone, blood clotting factor VIII and the surface antigen used in the hepatitis B vaccine.

  6. 6

Explain why factor VIII made by genetically modified cells is safer than factor VIII extracted from donated blood.

    Model answer

Blood-derived factor VIII carried a risk of transmitting viruses present in the donations, whereas a product made in culture cannot contain a human blood-borne pathogen.
