Continuity of Cells
Control points in the cell cycle and cancer
- 3 things to know
- Unit AS 1
Overview
Control point in the cell cycle, term tumour and benign and a malignant tumour.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What happens to the rate of cell division when control points are lost?
Define the term tumour.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a control point in the cell cycle?
Model answer
A control point is a stage at which the cell checks that conditions are suitable and that the previous phase has been completed correctly before it proceeds.
- 2
Give one thing a cell checks before it commits to DNA replication.
Model answer
It checks that it has grown sufficiently and that nutrients and other external conditions are favourable.
- 3
Give one thing a cell checks after DNA replication and before nuclear division.
Model answer
It checks that the DNA has been replicated completely and without damage.
- 4
What happens to the rate of cell division when control points are lost?
Model answer
Division becomes uncontrolled, so cells continue to divide when they should have stopped.
- 5
Define the term tumour.
Model answer
A tumour is a mass of cells produced by repeated uncontrolled cell division.
- 6
Explain the link between loss of control in the cell cycle and cancer.
Model answer
When the control points fail, cells divide repeatedly without regard to the needs of the tissue, and the resulting mass of cells is a cancer.
