Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is the retina?

    Model answer

The retina is the innermost layer at the back of the eye and contains the light-sensitive rod and cone cells.

  2. 2

Where in the retina are the cones most concentrated?

    Model answer

Cones are most concentrated at the fovea, the point directly opposite the centre of the lens.

  3. 3

Describe the distribution of rods across the retina.

    Model answer

Rods are absent from the fovea itself and become more numerous towards the periphery of the retina.

  4. 4

What is meant by convergence in the retina?

    Model answer

Convergence is the connection of many rod cells to a single sensory neurone leading into the optic nerve.

  5. 5

How does convergence increase visual sensitivity?

    Model answer

The sub-threshold stimuli from several rods are summed at the shared neurone, so together they can reach the threshold when no single rod could.

  6. 6

Why does convergence reduce visual acuity?

    Model answer

Impulses from many rods travel along one neurone, so the brain cannot tell which rod was stimulated and two close points cannot be resolved separately.
