Why must the population be large for the Hardy–Weinberg principle to hold?

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    State the Hardy–Weinberg principle.

    Model answer

In a population meeting certain conditions, the allele and genotype frequencies remain constant from generation to generation, a state called genetic equilibrium.

  2. 2

    What is genetic equilibrium?

    Model answer

The condition in which allele and genotype frequencies do not change between generations.

  3. 3

List the five conditions the principle requires.

    Model answer

A large population, random mating, no mutation, no migration into or out of the population, and no selection.

  4. 4

Why must the population be large?

    Model answer

In a small population chance alone changes the frequencies from one generation to the next, which is genetic drift.

  5. 5

    Why must mating be random?

    Model answer

If individuals choose partners by genotype, some combinations arise more often than chance predicts and the genotype frequencies depart from the equation.

  6. 6

Why must there be no selection?

    Model answer

Selection means some genotypes leave more offspring than others, which alters the proportion of their alleles in the next generation.
