Succession and climax communities
- 3 things to know
- Unit A2 1
Overview
Pioneer species, climax community and primary succession.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a pioneer species?
Give two features that make a species a good pioneer.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is succession?
Model answer
Succession is the change in the species composition of a community with time, culminating in a climax community.
- 2
What is a pioneer species?
Model answer
A pioneer species is one of the first organisms to colonise a bare habitat, able to survive conditions that most species cannot tolerate.
- 3
Give two features that make a species a good pioneer.
Model answer
A good pioneer disperses easily over long distances and tolerates extreme conditions such as little or no soil, intense light and wide swings of temperature.
- 4
How do pioneer species make a habitat suitable for later colonisers?
Model answer
Their growth and eventual death break down the bare surface and add humus, so a soil forms that holds water and nutrients for less tolerant species.
- 5
What happens to the pioneer species as a succession proceeds?
Model answer
Pioneers are usually outcompeted and disappear, because the conditions they created favour taller and more demanding species.
- 6
What is a climax community?
Model answer
A climax community is the stable end stage of a succession, in equilibrium with the environment and changing no further.
