Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Describe the overall shape of a transfer RNA molecule.

    Model answer

Transfer RNA is a single strand folded back on itself into a clover-leaf shape, held in place by hydrogen bonds between complementary bases within the strand.

  2. 2

    What is an anticodon?

    Model answer

An anticodon is the sequence of three exposed bases at one end of a transfer RNA molecule that pairs with a complementary codon on messenger RNA.

  3. 3

State the function of transfer RNA.

    Model answer

Transfer RNA carries a specific amino acid to the ribosome and positions it correctly by pairing its anticodon with the matching codon on the mRNA.

  4. 4

Where on a transfer RNA molecule is the amino acid attached?

    Model answer

The amino acid is attached to the free end of the molecule, at the opposite end from the anticodon.

  5. 5

Explain why each transfer RNA molecule can carry only one kind of amino acid.

    Model answer

Each transfer RNA is loaded by its own specific enzyme, an aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase, which recognises that tRNA and attaches only the amino acid matching its anticodon.

  6. 6

What is needed for an amino acid to be attached to its transfer RNA?

    Model answer

A specific enzyme joins the amino acid to its transfer RNA, and ATP is hydrolysed to supply the energy for the bond.
