Cohesion-tension theory and the transpiration stream
- 3 things to know
- Unit AS 2
Overview
Transpiration stream, cohesion-tension theory in outline and cohesion as it applies to water in the xylem.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is the transpiration stream?
Define cohesion as it applies to water in the xylem.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the transpiration stream?
Model answer
The transpiration stream is the continuous movement of water from the roots, up the xylem and out of the leaves, driven by transpiration.
- 2
State the cohesion-tension theory in outline.
Model answer
Evaporation from the leaves puts the water in the xylem under tension, and because water molecules cohere the whole column is pulled upwards as a single thread.
- 3
How does evaporation from the mesophyll create a negative pressure in the leaf xylem?
Model answer
Water lost from the mesophyll walls is replaced by water drawn out of the nearby xylem, and this pull lowers the pressure in the vessels below atmospheric pressure.
- 4
Define cohesion as it applies to water in the xylem.
Model answer
Cohesion is the attraction of water molecules to one another by hydrogen bonding, which holds the column of water together.
- 5
Define adhesion as it applies to water in the xylem.
Model answer
Adhesion is the attraction of water molecules to the walls of the xylem vessel, which helps to hold the column in place and support its weight.
- 6
Why is a continuous column of water essential to the cohesion-tension theory?
Model answer
Tension can only be transmitted from the leaf to the root if the thread of water is unbroken all the way down.
