The Hardy–Weinberg equation
- 3 things to know
- Unit A2 2
Overview
Recall questions on the meaning of p and q and of each term of the equation, why only the homozygous recessive frequency can be measured directly, and worked calculations of allele, genotype and carrier frequencies.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What do p and q represent in the Hardy–Weinberg equation?
What does each term of the Hardy–Weinberg equation represent?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the Hardy–Weinberg equation.
Model answer
p² + 2pq + q² = 1.
- 2
What do p and q represent?
Model answer
The frequencies of the dominant and the recessive allele respectively, so that p + q = 1.
- 3
What does each term of the equation represent?
Model answer
p² is the frequency of the homozygous dominant genotype, 2pq the heterozygous genotype and q² the homozygous recessive genotype.
- 4
Why does the heterozygote term carry a factor of two?
Model answer
The heterozygote can arise in two ways, with the dominant allele from either parent, so both combinations are counted.
- 5
Which genotype frequency can be measured directly from a population, and why?
Model answer
The homozygous recessive, q², because it is the only genotype with a phenotype of its own.
- 6
In a population, 16 per cent show the recessive phenotype. Find q.
Model answer
q² is 0.16, so q is the square root of 0.16, which is 0.4.
