Biological control of pest species
- 3 things to know
- Unit A2 1
Overview
Pest species, biological control and integrated pest management.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is biological control?
Name two kinds of organism used as biological control agents.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a pest species?
Model answer
A pest species is an organism that competes with humans for food or resources, or that damages crops, livestock or property.
- 2
What is biological control?
Model answer
Biological control is the deliberate use of a natural enemy of a pest to reduce the pest population to an acceptable level.
- 3
Name two kinds of organism used as biological control agents.
Model answer
Predators of the pest and species that compete with the pest are both used as control organisms.
- 4
State two advantages of biological control over chemical control.
Model answer
A control organism attacks only the target species so other wildlife is unharmed, and once established it maintains itself without repeated application.
- 5
Why does chemical control often become less effective over time?
Model answer
Resistant individuals in the pest population survive each application and breed, so the proportion of resistant pests rises.
- 6
Why can a pesticide harm species other than the pest?
Model answer
A pesticide is rarely specific, so it kills harmless and useful species as well, and it may accumulate along the food chain in predators.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Populations and Communities, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
