Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is irrigation?
Model answer
The artificial supply of water to farmland through channels, sprinklers or pipes so that crops can be grown where rainfall is too low or too unreliable.
- 2
Give one benefit and one drawback of irrigating farmland.
Model answer
It allows crops to grow in dry areas and often more than one harvest a year, but it can drain rivers and groundwater and leave damaging salts in the soil.
- 3
What is hydroponics?
Model answer
Growing plants without soil, with their roots held in water to which the exact nutrients the plant needs have been added.
- 4
What is aeroponics?
Model answer
Growing plants without soil, with their roots suspended in the air and sprayed with a fine mist of water and dissolved nutrients.
- 5
Why do hydroponics and aeroponics produce higher yields than growing the same crop in a field?
Model answer
Because the plant is given exactly the water and nutrients it needs with no competition from weeds, and it can be grown indoors in controlled conditions all year round.
- 6
What is meant by the new green revolution?
Model answer
A push to raise yields in ways that also protect soil, water and wildlife, using improved seed, water-saving methods and knowledge shared with small farmers.
