Choosing and constructing the right graph or chart
- 2 things to know
- All three papers
Overview
Line charts, bar charts, pie charts, pictograms, histograms, divided bars, scattergraphs and population pyramids, how to match a graph to the kind of data, and what every graph must carry.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What does a pie chart show?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What kind of data suits a line chart?
Model answer
Continuous data that changes over time, such as temperature, rainfall or population through a run of years.
- 2
What is a bar chart used for?
Model answer
Comparing separate categories, with the height or length of each bar showing its value.
- 3
What does a pie chart show?
Model answer
How one total is divided up, with the size of each sector showing that part's share of the whole.
- 4
What is a pictogram?
Model answer
A chart using a repeated small picture, each standing for a fixed number of items, with part of a picture used for part of that number.
- 5
What makes a histogram different from a bar chart?
Model answer
A histogram shows continuous data grouped into classes so its bars touch, while a bar chart shows separate categories with gaps between the bars.
- 6
Why must the classes of a histogram be of equal width?
Model answer
If they are not, wider bars cover more of the data than narrow ones and the heights no longer give a fair comparison.
