Evaluating an enquiry: problems, limitations and missing data

  • 3 things to know
  • Paper 3 section B

Overview

Why an enquiry is evaluated, problems in measuring physical data, inconsistency between collectors, questionnaire problems, limitations such as a single day or few readings, and the further data that would strengthen a river or city enquiry.

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What is the purpose of evaluating an enquiry?

    Model answer

To judge how well the methods worked and how good the data was, and so how much confidence the conclusion deserves.

  2. 2

Give two problems that can arise with the way physical data is measured.

    Model answer

A metre rule sinking into a soft bed or being held at an angle, and a float caught in an eddy or against the bank so the timing is wrong.

  3. 3

Why is inconsistency between people a problem when a group collects data together?

    Model answer

If each person measures or judges slightly differently, the differences between sites may come from the collectors rather than from the places.

  4. 4

What problems come with collecting data by questionnaire?

    Model answer

People may answer dishonestly or refuse altogether, and those willing to stop and talk may not represent everyone who uses the place.

  5. 5

What is meant by a limitation of the data that was collected?

    Model answer

A way in which it falls short of answering the question fully, such as too few readings, too few sites, or coverage of only one day or one season.

  6. 6

Why is data gathered on a single day a limitation?

    Model answer

Because the weather, tide, traffic or an event on that day may not be typical, so the results may not represent the site as it normally is.
