Completing choropleth, isoline, dot, desire-line and flow maps
- 2 things to know
- All three papers
Overview
How choropleth, isoline, dot, desire-line, proportional symbol and flow line maps display data, estimating values between isolines, and plotting readings accurately on an existing graph.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How does a choropleth map display its data?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How does a choropleth map display its data?
Model answer
Whole areas are shaded in bands according to their value, with the darker shades normally standing for the higher values.
- 2
What is an isoline map?
Model answer
A map carrying lines that join all the places sharing the same value of something, such as temperature, rainfall or height.
- 3
What is a dot map?
Model answer
A map on which each dot stands for a fixed number of something and sits where it actually occurs, so the density of dots shows the distribution.
- 4
What are desire lines?
Model answer
Straight lines joining each starting point to a single destination, one for each journey or group of journeys, showing where people have come from.
- 5
What is a proportional symbol map?
Model answer
A map on which the size of each symbol is scaled to the value at that place, so a larger symbol means a larger amount.
- 6
What is a flow line map?
Model answer
A map on which arrows follow the actual route taken and the width of each arrow is proportional to the amount moving along it.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
