Flood risk, hydrographs and flood management strategies
- 3 things to know
- Paper 1 section C
Overview
How rainfall, geology, relief and land use affect flood risk, reading hydrographs for discharge, lag time and flashy rivers, and the benefits and costs of dams, straightening, embankments, relief channels, warnings, zoning, tree planting and river restoration.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How does heavy rain falling for several days raise the chance of a flood?
Why can a short, intense downpour cause a flood even after a long dry spell?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How does heavy rain falling for several days raise the chance of a flood?
Model answer
The soil becomes saturated and can hold no more water, so any further rain runs straight over the surface into the channel.
- 2
Why can a short, intense downpour cause a flood even after a long dry spell?
Model answer
Ground baked hard by the sun cannot absorb water quickly enough, so most of the rain runs off the surface and reaches the river fast.
- 3
How does impermeable rock beneath a valley raise the risk of flooding?
Model answer
Water cannot soak down into it, so rainfall runs quickly over the surface and river levels rise sharply.
- 4
Why is the risk of flooding greater in a steep-sided valley than in a gently sloping one?
Model answer
Water races downhill into the channel instead of soaking in, so the river receives it all in a very short space of time.
- 5
How does covering land with buildings and roads change the way rainfall reaches a river?
Model answer
Tarmac and concrete are impermeable and drains and gutters carry water straight to the channel, so runoff is both faster and greater.
- 6
How does clearing woodland for farming or grazing affect the flood risk?
Model answer
Without trees to catch rain on their leaves and draw water up through their roots, more rain reaches the ground and runs off into the river.
