Pollutants from alkane fuels and the atmosphere
- 3 things to know
- Unit AS 2
Overview
Recall questions on the five pollutants from burning alkane fuels, how carbon monoxide and the oxides of nitrogen form in an engine and what harm each does, where the sulfur comes from, particulates and unburned hydrocarbons, the rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide, and both sides of the case for hydrocarbon fuels.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Name five pollutants produced during the combustion of alkane fuels.
How is carbon monoxide formed when a fuel burns in an engine?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name five pollutants produced during the combustion of alkane fuels.
Model answer
The pollutants are carbon monoxide, carbon as particulates, oxides of nitrogen, oxides of sulfur and unburned hydrocarbons.
- 2
How is carbon monoxide formed when a fuel burns in an engine?
Model answer
The hydrocarbon burns in a supply of oxygen that is too small for complete combustion, so the carbon is only partly oxidised and stops at carbon monoxide.
- 3
Why is carbon monoxide harmful to people?
Model answer
It binds to the haemoglobin in red blood cells in place of oxygen, so the blood can no longer carry enough oxygen to the tissues.
- 4
What harm is done by the carbon particulates released when a fuel burns?
Model answer
Soot particles blacken buildings, help to form smog and irritate the lungs, making asthma and other respiratory illnesses worse.
- 5
How are oxides of nitrogen formed inside a car engine?
Model answer
The temperature and pressure inside the cylinder are so high that nitrogen and oxygen drawn in with the air combine directly with each other.
- 6
Write equations for the formation of nitrogen monoxide in an engine and for its subsequent conversion in the air.
Model answer
In the engine N₂(g) + O₂(g) → 2NO(g), and in the air 2NO(g) + O₂(g) → 2NO₂(g).
