Percentage yield
- 3 things to know
- Unit AS 2
Overview
Term percentage yield, expression used to calculate a percentage yield and theoretical yield of a reaction.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define the term percentage yield.
State the expression used to calculate a percentage yield.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define the term percentage yield.
Model answer
Percentage yield is the actual yield of a product expressed as a percentage of the theoretical yield calculated from the balanced equation.
- 2
State the expression used to calculate a percentage yield.
Model answer
Percentage yield equals the actual yield divided by the theoretical yield, multiplied by 100.
- 3
What is meant by the theoretical yield of a reaction?
Model answer
The theoretical yield is the maximum mass of product that could be obtained if all of the limiting reagent were converted into that product.
- 4
Why should a calculated percentage yield never exceed 100%, and what does a higher value indicate?
Model answer
No more product can form than the equation allows, so a value above 100% shows that the product is impure or has not been fully dried.
- 5
Give four reasons why the yield of a preparation falls below 100%.
Model answer
The reaction may be reversible and not go to completion, competing side reactions may form other products, product is lost during transfer and purification, and the starting materials may be impure.
- 6
A preparation has a theoretical yield of 8.00 g and 6.40 g of product is isolated. Calculate the percentage yield.
Model answer
The percentage yield is 6.40 divided by 8.00 multiplied by 100, which is 80.0%.
