Geometrical isomerism and E–Z notation
- 3 things to know
- Unit AS 2
Overview
Label Z and label E.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is there no geometrical isomerism about a carbon–carbon single bond?
How is the priority of the two groups on a doubly bonded carbon atom decided?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What causes geometrical isomerism in an alkene?
Model answer
Rotation about the carbon–carbon double bond is restricted because turning the ends of the molecule would break the pi bond, and this energy barrier is too high to be overcome at ordinary temperatures.
- 2
Why is there no geometrical isomerism about a carbon–carbon single bond?
Model answer
A single bond is a sigma bond whose electron density is symmetrical about the bond axis, so the two ends of the molecule rotate freely and no fixed arrangement exists.
- 3
State the two conditions a molecule must satisfy in order to show geometrical isomerism.
Model answer
It must contain a carbon–carbon double bond, and each of the two doubly bonded carbon atoms must carry two different groups.
- 4
Why does propene show no geometrical isomerism?
Model answer
One of the doubly bonded carbon atoms in propene carries two hydrogen atoms, and because those two groups are identical there is only one possible arrangement.
- 5
Why does but-2-ene show geometrical isomerism?
Model answer
Each of the doubly bonded carbon atoms in but-2-ene carries one hydrogen atom and one methyl group, and because these differ two distinct arrangements are possible.
- 6
What does the label Z mean in the name of an alkene?
Model answer
Z means that the group of higher priority on one doubly bonded carbon and the group of higher priority on the other lie on the same side of the double bond.
