Uses of magnesium oxide, calcium carbonate and lime
- 3 things to know
- Unit AS 2
Overview
Recall questions on magnesium oxide in indigestion remedies and calcium carbonate in toothpaste with their equations, the manufacture of quicklime and why the kiln is swept, slaking and what is observed, the manufacture of cement and concrete, reinforcement with steel, and liming acidic farmland.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Write the equation for calcium carbonate reacting with dilute hydrochloric acid.
Give the chemical name and formula of quicklime and say how it is manufactured.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why is magnesium oxide used in indigestion remedies?
Model answer
It is a base and neutralises the excess hydrochloric acid in the stomach, and because it is almost insoluble it cannot make the stomach contents dangerously alkaline.
- 2
Write the equation for magnesium oxide neutralising stomach acid.
Model answer
The equation is MgO(s) + 2HCl(aq) → MgCl₂(aq) + H₂O(l).
- 3
Give two reasons why calcium carbonate is used in toothpaste.
Model answer
It is a mild abrasive that scrubs plaque from the enamel, and it is a base that neutralises the acids produced by bacteria in the mouth.
- 4
Write the equation for calcium carbonate reacting with dilute hydrochloric acid.
Model answer
The equation is CaCO₃(s) + 2HCl(aq) → CaCl₂(aq) + H₂O(l) + CO₂(g).
- 5
Give the chemical name and formula of quicklime and say how it is manufactured.
Model answer
Quicklime is calcium oxide, CaO, made by heating calcium carbonate strongly in a lime kiln.
- 6
Write the equation for the manufacture of quicklime from limestone.
Model answer
The equation is CaCO₃(s) → CaO(s) + CO₂(g).
