Hess's Law and enthalpy cycles
- 3 things to know
- Unit AS 2
Overview
Principle of conservation of energy and hess's Law.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain how Hess's Law follows from the principle of conservation of energy.
Why is Hess's Law so useful in thermochemistry?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the principle of conservation of energy.
Model answer
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but only transferred from one form or one place to another.
- 2
State Hess's Law.
Model answer
Hess's Law states that the enthalpy change of a reaction is the same whatever route is taken from the same reactants to the same products, provided the initial and final conditions are the same.
- 3
Explain how Hess's Law follows from the principle of conservation of energy.
Model answer
If two routes between the same substances gave different enthalpy changes, going out by one route and back by the other would create or destroy energy, which is impossible.
- 4
Why is Hess's Law so useful in thermochemistry?
Model answer
It allows enthalpy changes that cannot be measured directly to be calculated from other enthalpy changes that can be measured.
- 5
In an enthalpy cycle built from enthalpies of formation, where are the elements placed and which way do the arrows point?
Model answer
The elements in their standard states are placed at the bottom of the cycle and the arrows point upwards from them to both the reactants and the products.
- 6
In an enthalpy cycle built from enthalpies of combustion, where are the combustion products placed and which way do the arrows point?
Model answer
The combustion products, normally carbon dioxide and water, are placed at the bottom of the cycle and the arrows point downwards to them from both the reactants and the products.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Energetics, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
