Plane polarised light, optical activity and racemic mixtures
- 3 things to know
- Unit A2 1
Overview
What is meant by plane polarised light, how plane polarised light is produced and term optically active.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define the term optically active.
Name the instrument used to measure the rotation of plane polarised light.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe what is meant by plane polarised light.
Model answer
Plane polarised light is light whose oscillations take place in only one plane rather than in all planes at right angles to the direction of travel.
- 2
State how plane polarised light is produced.
Model answer
Ordinary light is passed through a polarising filter, which transmits only the component vibrating in one plane.
- 3
Define the term optically active.
Model answer
A substance is optically active if it rotates the plane of plane polarised light passed through it.
- 4
State the effect that a pair of enantiomers has on plane polarised light.
Model answer
They rotate the plane by equal angles in opposite directions.
- 5
Name the instrument used to measure the rotation of plane polarised light.
Model answer
The instrument is a polarimeter.
- 6
Describe how a polarimeter measurement is taken.
Model answer
Monochromatic light is polarised, passed through a tube containing the solution, and the analysing filter is turned until the light is transmitted again, with the angle turned recorded as the rotation.
