  1. 1

What is meant by thermal decomposition?

    Model answer

Thermal decomposition is the breaking down of a compound into two or more simpler substances by heating it.

  2. 2

Write the equation for the thermal decomposition of calcium carbonate.

    Model answer

    The equation is CaCO₃(s) → CaO(s) + CO₂(g).

  3. 3

State the trend in the thermal stability of the Group II carbonates.

    Model answer

Thermal stability increases down the group, so each successive carbonate needs a higher temperature before it will decompose.

  4. 4

Explain the trend in thermal stability of the carbonates in terms of the charge and size of the cations.

    Model answer

A cation distorts the electron cloud of the carbonate ion and weakens a carbon to oxygen bond, and since the ionic radius increases down the group while the charge stays at 2+, the charge density and therefore the distorting effect fall, leaving the carbonate ion harder to break up.

  5. 5

Which Group II carbonate decomposes at the lowest temperature, and why?

    Model answer

Magnesium carbonate decomposes most easily, because Mg²⁺ is the smallest of the ions and so distorts the carbonate ion most strongly.

  6. 6

What is meant by the polarising power of a cation?

    Model answer

The polarising power of a cation is its ability to distort the electron cloud of a neighbouring anion, and it increases with charge and decreases with ionic radius.
