Rates of Reaction
Rate of reaction, order and the rate constant
- 3 things to know
- Unit A2 1
Overview
Order of reaction with respect to a reactant, overall order of a reaction and rate constant.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is the difference between the rate of a reaction and its rate constant?
Write the general form of a rate equation for a reaction between A and B.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why is reaction rate followed as a change in concentration with time rather than as a change in mass?
Model answer
A rate equation relates the rate to the concentrations of the reactants, so the rate has to be expressed in the same terms for the two to be compared.
- 2
What is the difference between the rate of a reaction and its rate constant?
Model answer
The rate changes as the reactants are used up, while the rate constant stays fixed at a given temperature and changes only if the temperature changes.
- 3
Write the general form of a rate equation for a reaction between A and B.
Model answer
The general form is rate = k[A]ˣ[B]ʸ, where x and y are the orders with respect to A and B.
- 4
Define the order of reaction with respect to a reactant.
Model answer
The order with respect to a reactant is the power to which the concentration of that reactant is raised in the rate equation.
- 5
Define the overall order of a reaction.
Model answer
The overall order is the sum of the individual orders with respect to each reactant in the rate equation.
- 6
Define the rate constant.
Model answer
The rate constant is the proportionality constant that links the rate of reaction to the product of the reactant concentrations raised to their orders.
