Spin–spin splitting and the n+1 rule
- 3 things to know
- Unit A2 2
Overview
Recall questions on what causes splitting and the statement of the n+1 rule, the singlet, doublet, triplet and quartet patterns with their height ratios, why ethanol's methyl is a triplet and its methylene a quartet, why the OH is a singlet, why equivalent hydrogens do not split each other, and predicting the patterns for named compounds.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State the n+1 rule.
What splitting pattern arises from zero neighbouring hydrogens?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What causes spin–spin splitting?
Model answer
The small magnetic field of the hydrogen nuclei on an adjacent carbon atom adds to or subtracts from the applied field, so a hydrogen absorbs at slightly different frequencies.
- 2
State the n+1 rule.
Model answer
A peak is split into n plus one lines, where n is the number of hydrogen atoms on the adjacent carbon atom.
- 3
What splitting pattern arises from zero neighbouring hydrogens?
Model answer
A singlet, a single unsplit line.
- 4
What splitting pattern arises from one neighbouring hydrogen?
Model answer
A doublet, two lines of equal height.
- 5
What splitting pattern arises from two neighbouring hydrogens?
Model answer
A triplet, three lines in the height ratio 1 : 2 : 1.
- 6
What splitting pattern arises from three neighbouring hydrogens?
Model answer
A quartet, four lines in the height ratio 1 : 3 : 3 : 1.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Spectroscopy and Chromatography, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
