Laboratory preparation of a halogenoalkane from an alcohol
- 3 things to know
- Unit AS 2
Overview
Heating a mixture under reflux and final purification step in this preparation.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How is residual acid removed from a crude halogenoalkane?
Name the five techniques used to prepare and purify a liquid halogenoalkane from the corresponding alcohol.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name the five techniques used to prepare and purify a liquid halogenoalkane from the corresponding alcohol.
Model answer
The techniques are refluxing, separating with a funnel, removing acidity, drying and distillation.
- 2
State the reagents used to prepare 1-bromobutane from butan-1-ol.
Model answer
Butan-1-ol is heated with sodium bromide and concentrated sulfuric acid, which generate hydrogen bromide inside the flask.
- 3
Write the equation for the formation of hydrogen bromide in the reaction flask.
Model answer
The equation is NaBr(s) + H₂SO₄(l) → NaHSO₄(s) + HBr(g).
- 4
Write the equation for the reaction of butan-1-ol with hydrogen bromide.
Model answer
The equation is C₄H₉OH + HBr → C₄H₉Br + H₂O.
- 5
What is meant by heating a mixture under reflux?
Model answer
The mixture is boiled in a flask fitted with an upright condenser, so that any vapour formed is condensed and runs straight back into the flask.
- 6
Why is the mixture heated under reflux rather than in an open flask?
Model answer
The reactants and the product are volatile, so heating in an open flask would let them escape, whereas refluxing allows a long period of heating with no loss of material.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
