- 3 things to know
- Unit AS 1
Overview
Trend in electronegativity across a period, trend in electronegativity down a group and most electronegative element.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe the trend in electronegativity down a group, and explain it.
Name the most electronegative element.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define electronegativity.
Model answer
Electronegativity is the ability of an atom to attract the shared pair of electrons in a covalent bond towards itself.
- 2
Describe the trend in electronegativity across a period, and explain it.
Model answer
Electronegativity increases across a period, because the nuclear charge rises while the bonding electrons stay in the same shell with almost unchanged shielding.
- 3
Describe the trend in electronegativity down a group, and explain it.
Model answer
Electronegativity decreases down a group, because the bonding pair is held further from the nucleus and is shielded by more inner shells.
- 4
Name the most electronegative element.
Model answer
Fluorine is the most electronegative element.
- 5
Which three elements are the most electronegative, in order?
Model answer
The most electronegative elements are fluorine, then oxygen, then nitrogen and chlorine, which are of similar electronegativity.
- 6
Why are the noble gases usually left out of electronegativity tables?
Model answer
They form very few covalent bonds, so there is normally no bonding pair for them to attract.
