Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Distinguish between a polar bond and a polar molecule.

    Model answer

A polar bond is a single bond in which the shared pair is unequally shared, whereas a polar molecule is one in which the bond dipoles do not cancel so the whole molecule has a net dipole.

  2. 2

What two pieces of information are needed to decide whether a molecule is polar?

    Model answer

The polarity of each bond and the shape of the molecule are both needed, because the shape decides whether the individual bond dipoles cancel.

  3. 3

Explain why carbon dioxide has polar bonds but is a non-polar molecule.

    Model answer

Each C to O bond is polar, but the molecule is linear so the two equal dipoles act in exactly opposite directions and cancel.

  4. 4

Explain why water is a polar molecule.

    Model answer

Each O to H bond is polar and the molecule is bent, so the two dipoles do not cancel and there is a net dipole from the hydrogen atoms towards the oxygen.

  5. 5

Is tetrachloromethane polar or non-polar, and why?

    Model answer

Tetrachloromethane is non-polar, because its four polar C to Cl bonds point symmetrically to the corners of a tetrahedron and their dipoles cancel exactly.

  6. 6

Is trichloromethane, CHCl₃, polar or non-polar?

    Model answer

Trichloromethane is polar, because replacing one chlorine with a hydrogen destroys the symmetry so the bond dipoles no longer cancel.
