Trends in ionisation energy as evidence for shells and subshells
- 3 things to know
- Unit AS 1
Overview
Why first ionisation energy decreases down a group and general increase in first ionisation energy across a period.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain why first ionisation energy decreases down a group.
Explain the general increase in first ionisation energy across a period.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the three factors that determine the size of a first ionisation energy.
Model answer
The factors are the nuclear charge, the distance of the outermost electron from the nucleus and the shielding by inner electrons.
- 2
Explain why first ionisation energy decreases down a group.
Model answer
The outer electron is in a shell further from the nucleus and is shielded by more inner shells, and these effects outweigh the greater nuclear charge, so the electron is more easily removed.
- 3
Explain the general increase in first ionisation energy across a period.
Model answer
Nuclear charge rises while electrons are added to the same shell, so shielding barely changes and the outer electrons are pulled in more strongly.
- 4
Why is the first ionisation energy of aluminium lower than that of magnesium?
Model answer
Aluminium's outer electron is in a 3p orbital which is higher in energy and slightly further out than magnesium's filled 3s subshell, so it is easier to remove.
- 5
Why is the first ionisation energy of sulfur lower than that of phosphorus?
Model answer
Sulfur has two electrons paired in one 3p orbital and the repulsion between them makes one easier to remove, whereas phosphorus has a stable half-filled 3p subshell.
- 6
What do the small drops at aluminium and sulfur in a Period 3 graph provide evidence for?
Model answer
They provide evidence for subshells within a shell, because a plain shell model would predict a smooth rise across the period.
