Half-equations and combining them into redox equations
- 3 things to know
- Unit AS 1
Overview
Recall questions on what a half-equation is and which side the electrons go, balancing one in acid solution, the manganate(VII), dichromate(VI), iron(II), chlorine and thiosulfate half-equations, combining two into a full ionic equation, and checking both atoms and charge.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Write the half-equation for the oxidation of an iron(II) ion.
Write the half-equation for the reduction of chlorine to chloride ions.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a half-equation?
Model answer
A half-equation shows either the oxidation or the reduction part of a redox reaction on its own, with the electrons lost or gained written explicitly.
- 2
On which side of an oxidation half-equation are the electrons written?
Model answer
The electrons are written on the right hand side, because they are lost by the species being oxidised.
- 3
Write the half-equation for the oxidation of an iron(II) ion.
Model answer
The half-equation is Fe²⁺(aq) → Fe³⁺(aq) + e⁻.
- 4
Write the half-equation for the reduction of chlorine to chloride ions.
Model answer
The half-equation is Cl₂(aq) + 2e⁻ → 2Cl⁻(aq).
- 5
Describe the steps used to balance a half-equation in acid solution.
Model answer
The main element is balanced first, then oxygen is balanced by adding water, then hydrogen by adding H⁺ ions, and finally electrons are added to make the charges equal on both sides.
- 6
Write the half-equation for the reduction of the manganate(VII) ion in acid solution.
Model answer
The half-equation is MnO₄⁻(aq) + 8H⁺(aq) + 5e⁻ → Mn²⁺(aq) + 4H₂O(l).
