Structural, displayed and skeletal formulae
- 3 things to know
- Unit AS 2
Overview
Structural formula, what a skeletal formula shows and advantage of using a skeletal formula for a large molecule.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe what a skeletal formula shows.
Write the structural formula of butane.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does a displayed formula show?
Model answer
A displayed formula shows every atom in the molecule and every bond between them drawn out in full as lines.
- 2
What is a structural formula?
Model answer
A structural formula shows the atoms grouped along the chain in the least detail needed to identify the compound without ambiguity, such as CH₃CH₂CH₂OH.
- 3
Describe what a skeletal formula shows.
Model answer
A skeletal formula shows the carbon chain as a zig-zag line with the chain carbon atoms and their hydrogen atoms left out, and only functional groups and other elements written in.
- 4
In a skeletal formula, what does the end of a line stand for?
Model answer
The end of a line stands for a carbon atom carrying however many hydrogen atoms are needed to give that carbon four bonds.
- 5
How many carbon atoms are in a skeletal formula made of four lines joined in a zig-zag chain?
Model answer
There are five carbon atoms, one at each of the two ends of the chain and one at each of the three vertices.
- 6
How many hydrogen atoms are on a carbon at a vertex of a skeletal chain that carries no other group?
Model answer
It carries two hydrogen atoms, because two of its four bonds are already used by the carbon atoms on either side.

The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Nomenclature and Isomerism in Organic Chemistry, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
