Nuclear magnetic resonance and the TMS standard
- 3 things to know
- Unit A2 2
Overview
Resonance here, chemical shift and two solvents used in proton nmr and explain the choice.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why do hydrogen nuclei absorb radio frequency radiation in a magnetic field?
What is meant by resonance in nuclear magnetic resonance?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy detect?
Model answer
The hydrogen nuclei in a molecule, which absorb radio frequency radiation when placed in a strong magnetic field.
- 2
Why do hydrogen nuclei behave this way in a magnetic field?
Model answer
A hydrogen nucleus has spin, so it aligns either with or against the field, and radiation of the right frequency flips it from the lower to the higher level.
- 3
What is meant by resonance here?
Model answer
The absorption that occurs when the radio frequency supplied exactly matches the energy gap between the two spin states.
- 4
What is the difference between a low resolution and a high resolution nmr spectrum?
Model answer
A low resolution spectrum shows one single peak for each chemical environment, while a high resolution spectrum shows each of those peaks split into a group of lines.
- 5
What extra information does the high resolution spectrum give?
Model answer
The splitting shows how many hydrogen atoms are on the neighbouring carbon atom, so it reveals how the environments are connected.
- 6
What is TMS?
Model answer
Tetramethylsilane, Si(CH₃)₄, the compound added to a sample as the reference standard.
