Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

How is the stem of an IUPAC name chosen?

    Model answer

The stem comes from the longest continuous chain of carbon atoms that contains the principal functional group, and the number of carbon atoms in that chain gives the stem.

  2. 2

Give the stems used for chains of one, two, three, four, five and six carbon atoms.

    Model answer

They are meth-, eth-, prop-, but-, pent- and hex- respectively.

  3. 3

From which end of the chain is the numbering started?

    Model answer

Numbering starts from the end that gives the lowest possible number to the principal functional group, and then the lowest possible numbers to any substituents.

  4. 4

Name the compound with the structural formula CH₃CH₂CH₂CH₃.

    Model answer

It is butane, an unbranched alkane with four carbon atoms.

  5. 5

Name the compound with the structural formula (CH₃)₂CHCH₃.

    Model answer

It is 2-methylpropane, a three carbon chain carrying a methyl branch on the middle carbon.

  6. 6

Name the compound with the structural formula CH₃CH(CH₃)CH₂CH₃.

    Model answer

It is 2-methylbutane, a four carbon chain with a methyl group on carbon 2.
