Equilibrium
Reversible reactions and dynamic equilibrium
- 3 things to know
- Unit AS 2
Overview
Reversible reaction, term dynamic equilibrium and term homogeneous equilibrium.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What symbol is used in an equation to show that a reaction is reversible?
Define the term dynamic equilibrium.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by a reversible reaction?
Model answer
A reversible reaction is one in which the products can react together to reform the reactants, so the change can proceed in either direction.
- 2
What symbol is used in an equation to show that a reaction is reversible?
Model answer
The double half-arrow ⇌ is used in place of the single arrow.
- 3
Define the term dynamic equilibrium.
Model answer
A dynamic equilibrium exists when the forward and reverse reactions are proceeding at the same rate in a closed system, so the concentrations of all the substances present remain constant.
- 4
Why is the equilibrium described as dynamic rather than static?
Model answer
Both the forward and the reverse reactions continue at the molecular level, and it is only their rates being equal that makes the concentrations appear fixed.
- 5
Why must a system be closed before it can reach equilibrium?
Model answer
If a substance can escape from the vessel it cannot take part in the reverse reaction, so the two rates can never become equal.
- 6
Are the concentrations of reactants and products equal at equilibrium?
Model answer
No, the concentrations are constant but they are usually very different from one another.
