Calculations on dissolving ionic compounds
- 2 things to know
- Unit A2 1
Overview
Recall questions on the energy cycle relating lattice enthalpy, hydration enthalpies and enthalpy of solution, worked calculations for sodium, lithium, magnesium and potassium chlorides, why the chloride term is doubled for MgCl₂, why sodium chloride dissolves despite an endothermic value, and the main source of error in the school measurement.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
In the magnesium chloride calculation the chloride hydration enthalpy is doubled. Explain why.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Sodium chloride has a lattice enthalpy of −786 kJ mol⁻¹, and hydration enthalpies of −406 kJ mol⁻¹ for Na⁺ and −364 kJ mol⁻¹ for Cl⁻. Calculate its enthalpy of solution.
Model answer
The hydration enthalpies total −770 kJ mol⁻¹, so the enthalpy of solution is −770 − (−786) = +16 kJ mol⁻¹.
- 2
Lithium chloride has a lattice enthalpy of −846 kJ mol⁻¹, with hydration enthalpies of −519 kJ mol⁻¹ for Li⁺ and −364 kJ mol⁻¹ for Cl⁻. Calculate its enthalpy of solution.
Model answer
The hydration enthalpies total −883 kJ mol⁻¹, so the enthalpy of solution is −883 − (−846) = −37 kJ mol⁻¹.
- 3
Magnesium chloride has a lattice enthalpy of −2522 kJ mol⁻¹, with hydration enthalpies of −1920 kJ mol⁻¹ for Mg²⁺ and −364 kJ mol⁻¹ for Cl⁻. Calculate its enthalpy of solution.
Model answer
Two moles of chloride ions are hydrated, so the hydration total is −1920 + 2(−364) = −2648 kJ mol⁻¹ and the enthalpy of solution is −2648 + 2522 = −126 kJ mol⁻¹.
- 4
In the magnesium chloride calculation the chloride hydration enthalpy is doubled. Explain why.
Model answer
One mole of MgCl₂ releases two moles of chloride ions into solution, so each of them is hydrated.
- 5
A salt has an enthalpy of solution of +18 kJ mol⁻¹ and hydration enthalpies totalling −769 kJ mol⁻¹. Calculate its lattice enthalpy.
Model answer
Rearranging gives a lattice enthalpy of −769 − 18 = −787 kJ mol⁻¹.
- 6
Potassium chloride has a lattice enthalpy of −717 kJ mol⁻¹ and an enthalpy of solution of +31 kJ mol⁻¹. Calculate the sum of the hydration enthalpies of its ions.
Model answer
The sum is +31 + (−717) = −686 kJ mol⁻¹.
