Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What is the economic context of a media product?

    Model answer

The economic context is the financial conditions under which a product is made, funded and sold. Ownership, budget, revenue model and market all belong to it.

  2. 2

How does a production budget affect what appears on screen?

    Model answer

A budget sets the locations, cast, effects and shooting time available. Constraints show in the finished product as clearly as spending does.

  3. 3

Name four ways a media product can be funded.

    Model answer

Products are funded by advertising, by subscription, by direct sale, and by public money such as the licence fee. Sponsorship and crowdfunding add two more.

  4. 4

How does advertising funding shape content?

    Model answer

An advertising-funded product must deliver an audience advertisers want. Content that attracts the wrong audience, or offends sponsors, becomes commercially risky.

  5. 5

How does subscription funding shape content differently?

    Model answer

A subscription service must retain individual payers rather than please advertisers. Riskier and more specialised content becomes viable if it keeps subscribers loyal.

  6. 6

    What is a conglomerate?

    Model answer

A conglomerate is a large company owning businesses across several media sectors and often other industries. Scale gives it leverage over production and distribution.
