Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What is the social context of a media product?

    Model answer

The social context is the pattern of relationships, roles and expectations in the society that produced the product. Class, gender, age, ethnicity and family structure all belong to it.

  2. 2

Define values in the analysis of a media product.

    Model answer

Values are the principles a society treats as worth holding, such as independence or family loyalty. A product endorses some values and questions others.

  3. 3

    Define an ideology.

    Model answer

An ideology is a set of beliefs and values that presents a particular view of the world as natural and obvious. Media products carry ideologies whether or not they intend to.

  4. 4

How can a product reinforce a dominant social value without stating it?

    Model answer

A product reinforces a value by treating it as unremarkable — showing it as the ordinary background to the action. Nothing has to be argued for something to be normalised.

  5. 5

Give an example of a social attitude that has changed sharply within living memory.

    Model answer

Attitudes to women working outside the home changed profoundly between the 1950s and the present. An advertisement from each of those periods records the shift plainly.

  6. 6

How does a product's target audience reveal its social context?

    Model answer

The audience a product assumes shows who the producer expected to have money, time and interest. The group left out is as revealing as the group addressed.
