What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What occupied the site of Salford Quays before regeneration?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What occupied the site of Salford Quays before regeneration?
Model answer
The Manchester Docks, at the eastern end of the Manchester Ship Canal, which formed a major inland port handling cargo from around the world.
- 2
Why did the Manchester Docks close?
Model answer
The ship canal could not take the far larger container vessels that came to dominate shipping, so trade shifted to deep-water coastal ports and the docks closed in 1982.
- 3
Describe the state of the site after the docks closed.
Model answer
Thousands of jobs were lost, the quays and warehouses stood derelict, the dock basins were badly polluted, and Salford faced high unemployment and a strongly negative image.
- 4
Why did Salford need to rebrand rather than simply redevelop?
Model answer
The area's association with docks, dereliction and deprivation deterred investors and visitors, so a new identity had to be constructed alongside the physical works.
- 5
What was the first step in bringing the derelict docks back into use?
Model answer
Salford City Council bought the docks in the early 1980s using central government derelict land funding, and adopted a development plan for the whole site in 1985.
- 6
How was the poor water quality of the dock basins addressed?
Model answer
The basins were separated from the polluted canal and aerated so that water quality recovered, which allowed the quays to be marketed for waterside living and water sports.
