Overview

Recall questions on hydraulic action, wave quarrying, abrasion, attrition, corrosion, river and aeolian erosion at the coast, transport by traction, saltation, suspension and solution, longshore drift and its direction, why waves deposit their load, and flocculation in an estuary.

What you need to know

Answer each one before you reveal it.

Process

Explain the process of longshore drift.

Key term

Define abrasion at the coast.

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Explain the process of hydraulic action.

    Model answer

Waves force air and water into cracks under great pressure, and the sudden release as the wave withdraws shocks the rock, so repeated cycles prise it apart.

  2. 2

    What is wave quarrying?

    Model answer

The removal of whole blocks from a cliff face by the sheer impact force of a breaking wave, which is most effective where the rock is well jointed.

  3. 3

    Define abrasion at the coast.

    Model answer

Waves hurl sand and shingle against the cliff and the shore platform, wearing them away in the manner of sandpaper.

  4. 4

Why does attrition not erode the coastline itself?

    Model answer

Attrition is sediment particles knocking against one another and wearing each other down, so it rounds and reduces the load rather than attacking the shore.

  5. 5

What is corrosion, or solution, at the coast?

    Model answer

The chemical dissolving of soluble rock such as limestone by sea water.

  6. 6

How does a river erode within the coastal zone?

    Model answer

Flowing water in the channel and estuary attacks its banks and bed by hydraulic action and abrasion, deepening and widening the tidal channel.
