- Component 02
Overview

Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by the political dominance of an ethnic group?
Model answer
It is a situation in which one ethnic group controls the government, the armed forces and the distribution of resources, leaving other groups in the state with little say.
- 2
How does ethnic dominance erode the legitimacy of a state?
Model answer
Groups shut out of power and out of public spending stop seeing the government as theirs, and transfer their loyalty to their own community, which makes demands for autonomy or secession far more likely.
- 3
Define separatism.
Model answer
Separatism is a movement by a group within a state seeking greater autonomy, or full independence, for the territory it occupies.
- 4
What is self-determination?
Model answer
Self-determination is the principle that a people with a shared identity has the right to decide its own political status and form of government.
- 5
Why do self-determination and territorial integrity pull against each other?
Model answer
Self-determination supports a group's claim to break away and form its own state, while territorial integrity insists existing borders must not be changed, so every secession claim attacks the principle protecting the state it wants to leave.
- 6
Why did the Spanish government reject the 2017 independence referendum in Catalonia?
Model answer
Spain's constitution treats sovereignty as belonging to the Spanish people as a whole, so the courts ruled the vote unlawful and the state refused to accept its result.
