Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    How does a spit form?

    Model answer

Longshore drift carries sediment along the coast, and where the coastline changes direction the drift continues out into the open water and deposits material, building a ridge attached to the land at one end.

  2. 2

Why do many spits end in a recurved hook?

    Model answer

Waves arriving from a second direction, together with refraction around the end of the spit, push sediment landwards and curve the tip back towards the shore.

  3. 3

Why does a spit rarely close off a river mouth completely?

    Model answer

The discharge of the river and the outgoing ebb tide keep a channel scoured through the sediment.

  4. 4

Name the spit at the mouth of the Humber.

    Model answer

    Spurn Head.

  5. 5

What develops in the sheltered water behind a spit?

    Model answer

Slack water allows fine silt to settle, so mudflats form and then salt marsh colonises them in the lee of the spit.

  6. 6

    What is an onshore bar?

    Model answer

A ridge of sediment driven landwards from offshore by constructive waves until it rests against the shore, sometimes sealing off a bay and impounding a lagoon behind it.
