Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Define the term weathering.

    Model answer

Weathering is the breakdown of rock in place at or near the Earth's surface, without any transport of the material produced.

  2. 2

How does salt weathering break up desert rock?

    Model answer

Salt-bearing water is drawn into pores and cracks and then evaporates, and the salt crystals that grow exert pressure against the pore walls, so repeated crystallisation prises grains and flakes apart.

  3. 3

Why is salt weathering especially effective in deserts?

    Model answer

High evaporation constantly concentrates salts at and just below the surface, and there is too little rainfall to flush them away again.

  4. 4

Which salt is particularly destructive because it expands greatly when it takes up water?

    Model answer

Sodium sulfate is particularly destructive, because it swells substantially as it hydrates to form mirabilite.

  5. 5

    What is tafoni?

    Model answer

Tafoni are cavernous hollows weathered into a rock face, usually excavated by salt crystallisation working behind a harder case-hardened outer skin.

  6. 6

Explain the process of insolation weathering.

    Model answer

Intense daytime heating expands the outer layer of a rock while the interior stays cooler, and the repeated expansion and contraction sets up stresses that flake, granulate or shatter the surface.
