Measures of central tendency and dispersion
- 3 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on the mean, median and mode with a worked example, when each average is most useful, the range and interquartile range, standard deviation and a worked calculation, telling till from outwash by clast size spread, dispersion diagrams, box and whisker plots, comparing sites with equal means, and skewed data.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define the range, and state its main weakness.
How can the standard deviation of clast size distinguish till from outwash?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define the mean, the median and the mode.
Model answer
The mean is the sum of the values divided by the number of values, the median is the middle value when the data are placed in order, and the mode is the value that occurs most often.
- 2
The long axes of seven pebbles measure 9, 11, 12, 15, 15, 16 and 20 cm. Calculate the mean, the median and the mode.
Model answer
The mean is 14 cm, because the values sum to 98 and 98 ÷ 7 = 14, the median is 15 cm, and the mode is also 15 cm.
- 3
Why is the median often a better average than the mean for field data?
Model answer
The median is not pulled by extreme values, so a single boulder in a sample of beach pebbles would inflate the mean but barely affect the median.
- 4
When is the mode the most useful average?
Model answer
When the data fall into categories rather than being measured on a scale, such as the most common land use along a transect or the most frequent roundness class of pebbles.
- 5
Define the range, and state its main weakness.
Model answer
The range is the difference between the highest and lowest values, and because it uses only those two figures a single extreme value distorts it.
- 6
What is the interquartile range?
Model answer
The interquartile range is the difference between the upper quartile and the lower quartile, so it measures the spread of the middle 50% of the data and ignores extreme values.
