Overview
Recall questions on constructing and reading climate graphs, worked temperature range and rainfall totals for a tundra station, rainforest and tundra graphs compared, the limits of climate graphs, rose, kite and triangular diagrams, logarithmic scales, isoline, proportional symbol and flow line maps, a worked gradient, drawing cross-sections, and vertical exaggeration.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
A tundra station records monthly precipitation from January to December of 10, 8, 8, 10, 12, 20, 35, 40, 25, 20, 15 and 12 mm. Calculate the annual total and name the wettest month.
How is the annual temperature range read from a climate graph?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How is a climate graph constructed?
Model answer
Mean monthly precipitation is plotted as bars against one vertical axis and mean monthly temperature as a line against the other, with the twelve months along the horizontal axis.
- 2
Why is each month's temperature plotted at the middle of the month on a climate graph?
Model answer
Each figure is an average for the whole month, so placing it at the mid-point and joining the points shows the seasonal change as a continuous curve.
- 3
How is the annual temperature range read from a climate graph?
Model answer
The mean temperature of the coldest month is subtracted from the mean temperature of the warmest month.
- 4
A tundra climate station's warmest month averages 8°C and its coldest averages −28°C. Calculate the annual temperature range.
Model answer
The annual temperature range is 36°C, because 8 − (−28) = 36.
- 5
A tundra station records monthly precipitation from January to December of 10, 8, 8, 10, 12, 20, 35, 40, 25, 20, 15 and 12 mm. Calculate the annual total and name the wettest month.
Model answer
The annual total is 215 mm, and the wettest month is August with 40 mm.
- 6
How does a climate graph for a tropical rainforest station differ from one for an Arctic tundra station?
Model answer
The rainforest graph has an almost flat temperature line at about 26 to 28°C and tall precipitation bars through most of the year, while the tundra graph has a temperature line below freezing for most of the year, rising above 0°C only briefly in summer, and short bars totalling under 250 mm.
