Geos, blow holes, caves, arches, stacks and stumps
- 3 things to know
- Component 01
Overview
Recall questions on how geos, blow holes, sea caves, arches, stacks and stumps form, the sequence of erosional landforms on a headland, the roles of jointing and trapped air, and examples such as Durdle Door and the Needles.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a stump?
Put the sequence of erosional landforms on a headland into order.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a geo?
Model answer
A narrow, steep-sided inlet cut into a cliff where the sea has eroded along a fault or a major joint.
- 2
How does a blow hole form?
Model answer
The roof of a cave is weakened by hydraulic action and by trapped air pressure until a vertical shaft breaks through to the cliff top, and spray is then forced out of it at high tide.
- 3
Describe how a sea cave forms.
Model answer
Waves exploit a joint or fault at the cliff base by hydraulic action and abrasion, widening it first into a notch and then into a tunnel running back into the cliff.
- 4
Explain how a cave becomes an arch.
Model answer
Caves on either side of a headland are cut back until they meet, or a single cave is driven right through the neck of the headland, leaving a bridge of rock above the opening.
- 5
How is a stack formed from an arch?
Model answer
Weathering and wave attack widen the arch and thin its roof until it can no longer support its own weight and collapses, leaving an isolated pillar separated from the headland.
- 6
What is a stump?
Model answer
The low remnant of a stack that has been undercut and worn down, and which is often covered at high tide.
