  • 3 things to know
  • Component 01

Overview

Recall questions on the U-shaped cross profile of a glacial trough, truncated spurs, hanging valleys and waterfalls, misfit streams, ribbon lakes and rock basins such as Wastwater, trough ends, rock steps, and fjords such as the Sognefjord.

What you need to know

Answer each one before you reveal it.

Key term

Why does a glacier produce a U-shaped valley where a river produces a V-shaped one?

Process

How is a hanging valley formed?

Key term

What is commonly found where a hanging valley meets a main trough?

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Describe the cross profile of a glacial trough.

    Model answer

It is steep-sided and flat-floored, forming a broad U shape that is much wider and deeper than the river valley it replaced.

  2. 2

Why does a glacier produce a U-shaped valley where a river produces a V-shaped one?

    Model answer

A glacier fills the whole valley and erodes the sides as well as the floor, whereas a river erodes mainly at its bed along a narrow channel.

  3. 3

    What are truncated spurs?

    Model answer

They are the blunt, steep cliffs left where a glacier cut straight through the interlocking spurs of the pre-glacial river valley.

  4. 4

How is a hanging valley formed?

    Model answer

A tributary glacier erodes less deeply than the main glacier, so when the ice melts its valley is left high above the floor of the main trough.

  5. 5

What is commonly found where a hanging valley meets a main trough?

    Model answer

A waterfall, where the tributary stream drops down into the main valley.

  6. 6

    What is a misfit stream?

    Model answer

It is a stream far too small to have cut the valley it flows along, because that valley was carved by ice.
